LOW EXPECTATIONS

The CPMC site is awash in comments about a members use of the term “greasy Columbians”. The Senator felt like his crew was being held to a double standard when compared to this site, since I tend to generalize a lot.

And, ironically, AGAIN, our friend, DC Bachelor, happened to post on white men THE SAME DAY Capo uttered his supposed “racial slurs.” Where were you politically correct crusaders on that one? Talk about hypocrits!

I was reading some comments in response to that post and come across this one… of course by an anonymous poster:

Actually, we readers know and expect DCB to say idiotic, ill-informed, racially charged, gender demeaning posts. A quick perusal of his past posts (i.e. Conservatives vs. Whores, Girls Lack Conversation Skils, etc) quickly shows the reader what DCB stands for and what we can expect from his posts.

I love it when people expect little from me. They will never be disappointed.

Well, reverse racism and double standards aside, I Think there’s a pretty substantial difference between DCB’s comments and Capo’s – namely, context.

A lot of us (myself included) have been reading DCBfor years and actually have come to know his personality pretty well in a certain way. We can tell when he is being sarcastic, when he is exaggerating for effect, when he is making fun of himself, and when he really IS just being a dick, we like him well enough to forgive him.

None of this is true for Capo. The few times he has posted on CPMC, it has been almost without exception to complain bitterly about something or to insult his readers. There is no ironic self-awareness and no humorous good nature to make us forgive him. It’s clear that his friends know him in a different way, that they have to context to understand or at least accept his idiocy and rudenss. What bothers me is that they expect their readers, who *don’t* have this context to somehow put up with this from a personality we don’t know at all, and who only seems to stop by when he has something negative to say. No one likes that.

So, I suppose my point is that the DCB/Capo comparison is a simplistic equivocation without much merit. The similarity, as has been observed, is that they both from time to time make comments that appear to be judgements or generalizations based on race. This is quite right, but meaningless without taking into account the context of the comments and the commentators.

Honestly, CPMC needs to lose Capo – he is just bringing them down. Capo will never be funny and witty like my DCB.

DCB–sounds like your expectations game is more fun than ours.

    Capo is not going anywhere.

Kilgore, please do not forget this FDR post, which blows your pontification out of the water.

The only expectations we have are for ourselves. But, thank you for reading…

    Thanks.

Capo is like the loose cannon of the group. If I had to make a cheesy 80’s comparison, I’d compare him to the Tom Cruise character in that movie “Taps”.

He seems like a strange fit with the rest of the CPMC crew…it’s funny to come across his angry diatribes in the midst of posts about charity bashes and barbecues. A couple of times I thought I was on the “Rude Pundit” site.

I can only imagine the real reactions of the rest of CPMC after reading one of Capo’s posted rants. I can just hear the collective “Oh no, he din’t!”

  6. Cap Capo

Maybe Capo not that intelligent to begin with? Maybe him insulting other ethnic groups, is his way to shore up his shortcomings. But just like the klan with blacks and jews, capo has to make his comments from 20 miles away, otherwise somebody would put a lead pipe through his skull and lower his I.Q. from 20 to 0. Let the guy rant.

    Senator –

I don’t understand how the post you link is intended to refute my point.

    1. It is negative in nature. Granted, the negativity is directed towards a person whom I happen to dislike – nevertheless, it is negative, just like every other post Capo has made.

    2. It is impersonal and rhetorical and nature. That’s fine as far as it goes, but it does little to give the reader a more textured idea of the author.

Let me reiterate: I don’t think Capo is a bad guy. On the contrary, I’m inclined to believe he’s not based on the length to which his friends are willing to go to stick up for him. My point was that he doesn’t seem to care about conveying any positive personality traits he might have to the readers of your site.

This is intended as constructive criticism, and not a mere insult.

    Good points, Kilgore.

When we say he adds value, we mean that he makes the CPMC multi-faceted. Look, all men have strong, macho, tough, and sometimes negative or critical sides. Capo presents this “voice,” just as I provide a different type of “voice.”

At the end of the day, he definitely has the blood pumping in the ‘sphere, which can only be a good thing, generally. He does see the point that it is sometimes good to temper rhetoric to get your point across.

    Anyway…thanks for the words…
